Jackson and Harrison – out checking cows

In 2014, life threw us a curve ball and we made the very difficult decision to sell the herd. The majority of the cows went to Clinton Ollenberger of Goodlow, B.C with other small groups dispersed around the province. Much to our surprise, our sons, Jackson and Harrison, were very adamant that we keep some animals. In the end we kept the cream of our heifer calves which were bred in 2015 and calved out in 2016.

These heifers represent the culmination of 17 years of selective breeding and our desire to create females uniquely adapted to our environment. These are thick, heavy boned females with superior milk production and wonderful maternal instincts. These females are very well adapted for the tough grazing conditions we subject them to – our cows rarely have the opportunity to graze cultivated fields – they spend the majority of their time out in the bush working for their meals. Their ability to wean out impressive calves in the fall as well as maintain their own condition, earns their right to stay in the herd.

In order to justify purchasing a bull we decided to purchase a few additional females which we did in the winter of 2016. We bought three bred cows from Poplar Meadows and ended up with three spectacular heifer calves. When we learned that Gumbo Gulch was going to be dispersing the majority of their herd, we decided to pick up four bred cows from them. The core of our original herd came from Gumbo Gulch and we knew that we could not go wrong with those genetics. We ended up with 3 bull calves and 1 heifer calf from that acquisition.

So going into the winter we have 9 amazing bull calves to grow and develop. We have decided not to take any of the bulls to bull sales next year but instead will sell them all from home. We hope that you will find the time to come and see our animals – we always have time to show off the herd and share a cup of coffee!
